Kurdish YPG fighters liberate villages from ISIS or Daesh.

A broad swath of Aleppo, historic mosques and high streets included, comes under fire in the battle for Syria's largest city that began in July of 2012 and continues to this day.

Citizens from rebel-held Eastern Ghouta, a suburb east of Damascus, are evacuated from various villages (mainly Douma, Jobar, Jesreen and Harasta) and relocated to a refugee camp in government-controlled Dhahiyet Qudsayyah, west of Damascus, on 22 February. In the shelter, which also houses a school, they are provided with food, clothes and other basic necessities.

Aleppo, Syria
'Um Abdo Al Halabiyeh' ('Abdo's Mother, the Aleppine') is a Syrian Youtube sitcom filmed amidst the destruction and bombs of rebel held Aleppo by a local production company known as "Bukra Ahla" (Tomorrow is Beautiful). Launched in June 2014, the show pokes fun at the chaos that has become routine amidst Syria's brutal civil war. The characters in the show are all adults played by children and shows are often shot in ruined buildings, sometimes located on frontlines.
9 year old Rasha plays the main character, Um Abdo, an animated housewife who constantly pokes fun at the Syrian government and the opposition. Since rising to popularity during Ramadan 2014, both Rasha and the show have become Youtube sensations in Syria and the Arab world.
Um Abdo Al Halabiyeh is not the only show being shot in rebel held Aleppo. Another comedy, 'Mina Fi Syria' ('Forbidden in Syria'), is a show directed at adults and is being also being produced by Bukra Ahla. Regardless of their intended audiences, the shows are a satirical display of resilience in the face of death and deprivation.

The cathedral is more than a thousand year old and is used for the first time as a place to exhibit current news photographs. Photos by Transterra Media.

Aleppo, Syria
Aleppo is the largest city in Syria. It is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world arguably dating back to 6,000BC. It has a rich history and cultural heritage due to its location at the end of the ancient trade route connecting the West and the East, known as the Silk Road. When the Syrian uprising began in March 2011 the citizens of Aleppo remained largely uninvolved. However as the conflict progressed the city could not help but be dragged into it. Now it is the stage of an ongoing military confrontation between the Free Syria Army (FSA), Islamic Front, ISIS, and Kurdish People’s Defence Unit against Bashar al-Assad’s government and Hezbollah. There has also been a large amount of infighting between the rebel groups. Much of the cities historic souks and mosques have born the brunt of the violence and the city is barely recognizable from how it was just four years ago.
