Sunni Tribe in Iraq Trains Child Sold...
Anbar, Iraq

March 2, 2015
Anbar, Iraq

Children of the Sunni tribe of Bou Fahed receive weapons and trench-warfare training from community elders in Ramadi, al-Anbar province, Iraq in order to prepare them against potential ISIS assaults. In the video, boys as young as 12 claim to have taken part in pitched battles against ISIS, whereas others appearing much younger hold automatic weapons and join in chants vowing to "die with dignity" and defend their land from ISIS with their "dead bodies". One says he would rather train in combat in order to please his father and bring honor on his family than go to school. Abu Oman, a tribal Sheikh, says that teaching young children to defend their honor and protect their land is part of tribal tradition, and it is a father's duty to teach his son the importance of these virtues.

Transcription:

Trainer (man, Arabic):

(00:07) If you see anybody moving in front of you, shoot him. Our enemies are located from this point onward.

(00:21) You are the men of…

Children: Bou Fahed men!

Trainer: Whose men are you?

Children: The Bou Fahed!

(00:30) Trainer: Would you allow ISIS to come here?

Children: No!

(00:57) Trainer: By God, you will fight in real life, not in some fake battle.

(01:16) Hold it like that, to the front.

(01:24) Put the rifle butt against your shoulder.

(01:45) Trainer: Who is your enemy?

Children: ISIS! (Shouting)

Trainer: Do you want to fight them?

Children: Yes! (Shouting)

Trainer: You are heroes, good job.

Oman, 12 years old, (Child, Arabic):

(02:10) We are the heroes of the Bou Fahed clan. We are standing up to ISIS to defend our land and honor.

This is the field of honor, dignity and pride. We are standing here to defend our honor, women and land.

Many battles began in the Eastern Husseiba area, al-Madeek and al-Jareyya. We support our brothers in the police, the army, al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization militia), and other tribal heroes.

We are steadfast against ISIS. By God, they will only step on this land over our dead bodies.

I participated in the battle of Eastern Huseiba. My brothers from the police and the clans were worried about my safety. But I asked to shoot, and they allowed me to shoot.

My friends at school are proud of me. I support my brothers from the Bou Fahed clan.

Interviewer: Are you not afraid of being injured or hurt? Are you not scared of the sound of shooting? What would you do?

Does one die once or twice?

Interviewer: What is that? Repeat it.

Does one die once or twice? We would rather die with our dignity than live in humiliation.

Ali Kamal Sabagh, 13 years old, (Child, Arabic):

(03:45) The Bou Fahed clan was at the barricade, the Eastern Husseiba barricade. There was shooting. I said: “Should I shoot?” They said: “No, do not.” They did not let me shoot.

They asked me to bring them water, to carry ammunition and bring food. I stayed with them.

Interviewer: Are you not afraid of being injured? What do your friends in school tell you? What class are you in?

I am in seventh grade. I am not afraid of being injured or of anything that might happen to me. All I care about is protecting my home, honor, and dignity.

Interviewer: How do you feel about the police and the army? What does your father do for a living?

I love the police and the army and I wish I could participate with them in fighting ISIS, the terrorists. I hope that ISIS leaves al-Anbar.

My friends ask me if I fear to get injured, I say: “No, I am protecting my home.”

Interviewer: What does your father do for a living?

He works in the police force.

Interviewer: Your father is in the police?

Yes.

Chanting 1:

(04:53) These are the people of al-Ramadi, who did not accept shame.

They are both young and gray-haired,

They are the people of dignity, generosity, manliness and goodness,

We want to die with dignity!

Chanting 2:

We will stand and fight you, ISIS!

You have doomed yourselves by attacking the Bou Fahed clan,

The brave have stood against you,

They will cut your tails.

Chanting 3:

O my brothers,

We are leopards and our flag shall remain high,

We taught the entire universe a lesson,

We will die with our dignity, and never surrender or be humiliated.

O my brothers,

We shall fight,

We are the victorious leopards,

O my brothers,

Cover your head for the Bou Fahed have come.

Abu Oman, Tribal Sheikh (Man, Arabic):

(06:09) People should know that these are the traditions of the clans. We raise our children to have good ethics and religious values; to be generous and respect hospitality. This is the most important message we want to deliver. Our children, in spite of their young age, they were brought up to defend their land, honor, religion, homeland, the province, and the clan. As their fathers we have duties, but they also have duties, too. They need to understand the need to defend honor, land and religion.

We want to deliver this message to anyone who does not understand what a clan means. Each clan can represent a country that has its own traditions, customs and constitution. Whoever does not know this should know it.

Interviewer: How old were you when you started to shoot? Did your father also teach you these things?

I was 10 years old, as I remember. I started to shoot during the good times; at weddings, occasions, and funerals. We learnt how to shoot since we were children.

Interviewer: Do you know anyone from your clan who joined ISIS? What were the reasons behind this?

Unfortunately, yes, there are many people from the clans and from al-Anbar who joined ISIS. They were fooled due to unemployment. They were lured by money.

I hold government officials responsible for this. If they had good intentions to embrace all the sons of Iraq and keep them within a unified country, none of this would have happened.

Baghdad, Iraq

A suicide bomb exploded by an army checkpoint near a restaurant in the northern district of Tailibiya, killing nine people according to local sources. The bomb was part of a series of bomb and mortar attacks on Thursday which targeted Shia neighborhoods across the Iraqi capital which left at least 36 people dead. The violence in Baghdad has been increasing since September, an AFP report states that 400 people have been killed this month already. Kareem al-Nouri from the Badr Organization, a Shia political party with a military wing blamed the attacks on ISIS, "They [ISIS] are making a statement to the Shia fighting them... we can target you in your household." A local man blamed the decrease in the army's security operations for the rise of attacks.

Transcription:

Civilian, (man, Arabic)
"There were patrols here and checkpoints, but they removed the checkpoints from the area about two days ago. We went to the center and we found a lieutenant, we asked him "Why did you remove the checkpoints?" He said that the local forces had taken over. We stayed until the morning and asked that they secure the area and checked for explosives, they said no."

"This was the day before yesterday. They only gave us one night to sleep and then the explosion happened. Now the lieutenant comes and says that he will fix the situation and take control and protect us. He betrayed us."

Interviewer: What do you want to tell the government?
"I want to tell the parliament that the son of Iyad Allawi was in this apartment and the son of al-Maliki was in that apartment, the son of al-abadi was in that apartment."

"We want a person who cares about Iraq, who truly has the Iraqi citizenship, not just the passport. The passport is not honorable. We want a person who truly has the Iraqi citizenship, get me a person from the parliament who is truly Iraqi."

The situation in the Baghdad International Airport is back to normal after reports indicated that ISIS fighters were just a few miles away.
In a televised interview on Sunday, October 12, the U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey said: “They were within 20 or 25 kilometers [of Baghdad airport] and had they overrun the Iraqi unit, it would have been a straight shot to the airport."
Reports said that the U.S. army had to call in Apache helicopters last week to prevent ISIS from seizing the Baghdad International Airport.

Interviews:

Hadi Challab Khdeir, Passenger (man, Arabic):
"We left our area and came from Dar Sakela to Baghdad International Airport. The flow is normal, the procedures are going smoothly, and the security measures are successful. I want to thank the workers in the airport for the procedures they are doing that serve the citizens. We saw the exact opposite of what TV channels claim, concerning ISIS's approach to the airport and postponing of flights. What we witnessed was the exact opposite. We want to thank the security forces in Baghdad airport, and the officials here who are doing their best to serve the citizens."

Abu Haidar, Passenger (man, Arabic):
"The airport is jammed with travelers, the officials here are welcoming the citizens and the airport is completely normal. There is nothing wrong with it. The airport has travelers from all around the world and the officials are treating us really well. The situation is very good. None of the rumors are true; everything is fine and there is nothing to worry about."

Salem Hadi, Manager at Baghdad International Airport (man, Arabic):
"Since the beginning, the Iraqi airlines have aimed to serve all people. We are up to 32 flights per day, to other provinces, Arab countries and Europe. The flow of the flights is normal and we are trying to serve the citizens the best way possible. Before, we suffered from some inconveniences concerning the procedures. Now things are improving and it is getting better and the procedures are being more flexible. Before, we used to have flight delays, but now there are no delays at all, unless there was a technical issue. None of the rumors is true, it is [only in] the media. Let them say whatever they want to say, but in reality we have no problem. Our flights are running 24/7. The passengers are in the airport, and they are traveling."

The Iraqi government has stepped up security measures in the capital Baghdad as a response to reports that the group that calls itself the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, is approaching. The militant group has vowed to march on the city after occupying several key towns, including Iraq's second city, Mosul. Tens of thousands of volunteers have answered the call to join security forces and push back Islamic State militants. Recruiting volunteers is part of what officials have described as a new strategy to protect Baghdad and its surroundings.

Tal-Afar Refugees Form Shia'a Militia
Sinjar

Sinjar, Iraq

Refugees from the northern city of Tal Afar have formed a Shia’a militia, called al-Hussein Brigade, to fight against ISIS. The city fell after a two-day battle with the Iraqi army. Many suspect that the Iraqi soldiers were ordered to abandon their positions by their superiors, thus making victory all too easy for the ISIS militants. The Kurds also did little to help defend against the ISIS onslaught. These feelings of abandonment led these refugees, who are now in Sinjar, to take matters into their own hands, forming a military training camp with 1500 volunteers.

Transcription:

SOUNDBITE 1: Sheikh Mohamad Naser, (man, Arabic):
(01:00) "We formed the group with 1500 volunteers who came to answer the call of the religious leader Sayed Ali al-Sistani. The residents of Tell Afar answered the call and al-Hussein brigade was formed with 1500 volunteers. They are ready to liberate their areas, especially Tel Afar, and fight against ISIS. And they are trained weapons in the hands of the religious leader to defend the holy sites and any area in Iraq.” (01:35)

(01:46) "The main purpose is to defend the areas ISIS took, and to liberate them, just like Amerli was liberated, we need to liberate all the areas controlled by ISIS and not only Tel Afar." (02:00)

(02:13) "A huge conspiracy was planned against us, and we had to withdraw from the area. It was not out of fear from ISIS; it was because we did not receive any artillery support or any support at all. We waited for the government to send us supplies and it did not. So we withdrew to protect our honor. If we lost to ISIS, they would have killed the men and taken the women for sexual Jihad. We wanted to protect our honor so we left." (02:38)

(02:46) "We have some conflicts with the new government. It is newly formed and they did not give the Turkmen a ministry, we also do not have position in the ministry." (02:58)

(03:16) "ISIS is, now in 2014, much stronger than al-Qaeda in 2005. The latter was not able to cross over the government and we liberated Tel Afar, and fought al-Qaeda for 10 years. Now ISIS is not stronger that al-Qaeda, however, it is new and it began from the Iraqi house." (03:36)

SOUNDBITE 2: Imad Jawad, Chairman of the Special Forces (man, Arabic):
(03:48) "We do special training to fight ISIS. Our motto is “I shoot to kill”. We train under the supervision of the religious leader to fight ISIS." (04:06)

(04:13) "Since the fighters are refugees, they have a strong motive to fight, in addition to the main reason which is the religious leader." (04:23)

(04:35) "We are trained and we trained them to fight. We did not think about American strikes or anything else, we are fighting alone, we are counting on our training and on local support." (04:46)

SOUNDBITE 3: Sheikh Mohamad Naser, (man, Arabic):
(05:50) "To revive the issue of Ahl al-Bayt (the people of the house) is as important as reviving our own issues". (06:02)

(06:10) "The word "Labbayk ya Hussein" (we obey the Hussein), shakes the throws of the oppressors." (06:14)

(06:25) "I say this and I hope God will forgive me, and it helps you fight, to raise the name of God." (06:32)

SOUNDBITE 4: Mustapha Khodor, (man, Arabic):

(06:33) "We came here to fight and liberate Tel Afar, and all the areas of Iraq." (06:42)

(06:49) "The Kurds told us, that we would have to leave for a few days and then come back. Then after a while, they told us that they could not bring us back yet, and we needed to find a place to stay. So we felt betrayed by the Kurds and everyone else after Mosul has surrendered. There were 3 brigades there and yet the city was lost in 2 hours. Therefore we had to go to Sinjar after ISIS came." (07:16)

(07:26) "We are ready and our religious leader has made a big effort to train us, and we are ready." (07:33)
