Syrian Presidential Election campaign
Damascus, Syria

The Syrian regime will hold the presidential election on the 3rd of june : president Bashar el Assad is widely expected to win.
For the first time, he is facing two other candidates, Maher Abdel Hafiz Hajjar and Hassan Abdullah al-Nouri, both relatively unknown and both from the opposition tolerated by the regime. Posters of the candidates have appeared on the walls of the main cities held by the government.
Maher Abdel Hafiz Hajjar is a lawmaker, former member of the Communist Party which was part of the tolerated opposition, and independent MP from Aleppo. Hassan al Nouri is a businessman from Damascus, and a former MP and minister.

The Syrian National Coalition, the main opposition in exile, has called the election a "farce".
A new law was passed to prevent leaders from the opposition in exile to run for presidency : "Section 30 of the draft law stipulates that candidates for the office of president of the republic must have maintained continuous, permanent residence in the Syrian Arab Republic for a period of no less than 10 years at the time of seeking nomination," the Syrian state news agency SANA said.

The election will take place in government-held areas in Syria : entire region under rebels control won't take part in the poll, raising questions about the legitimacy of the election. Refugees who fled the country through unofficial crossings are barred from voting. 2,7 million people are registered with the UNHCR in Lebanon, Turkey, Irak, Jordan and Egypt. 6,5 million people are internally displaced on Syria's 22 million population.

The United Nations and the NGO's lack financial resources to deal with the humanitarian crisis : on the 4 billion dollars needed, the UN only received one billion.
