Thousands of Syrians Flee Tal-Abyad
Akçakale, Turkey
By AhmedDeeb
15 Jun 2015

Thousands of Syrian refugees have fled to Turkey as the battle between the YPG and Islamic State militants for the Syrian town of Tal Abyad rages.

"YPG and Brigades of Raqqa rebels came from Kobane from the west of Tal Abyad to surround Tal Abyad to take ISIS positions," Hassan, a Syrian man from Tal Abyad who left a few days ago said. “Some groups from FSA are currently in Turkey and are ready to re-enter Syria to fight against ISIS. We would like to re-enter to fight side by side the Kurdish fighters, but they refused our support,”  he adds.

"The attacks started 2 weeks ago with airstrikes from the international coalition, and then the Kurdish fighters side by side with some groups of the FSA started fighting ISIS on the ground in order to reach center of Tel Abyad," said Mohammed from Tel Abyad, who was forced to flee.

Carrying whatever possessions they could, and with their children in tow, families flooded through the Turkish border at Akcakale after Turkish authorities reopened the border, previously closed - and across which ISIS militants and Turkish military men looked on at eachother from only yards away. Many of those attemting to escape were forced at gunpoint by ISIS militants to turn back.

There had earlier been chaotic scenes as some of the refugees crossed the border illegally through holes in fences, prompting rapid intervention from the Turkish army. Turkey had for several days been blocking the Syrians from entering Turkey, saying it would only allow them into the country in the event of a humanitarian tragedy.

"I have all my family in Tel Abyad, my father, mother, sisters and brothers all of them are under fire from all parties on the ground, ISIS, FSA, YPG and the international coalition," a woman from Raqqa said.

"There was a pregnant woman and she gave birth while she was waiting for the opening of the Turkish-Syrian border 4 days ago," Aysha, 60-year-old, Syrian woman from Raqqa who left Tal Abyad a week ago said.
