L'Eroica 2013
Gaiole, Italy
By Transterra Editor
07 Oct 2013

Every year, during the first weekend of October, thousands of passionate cyclists reach Gaiole, a small village in the Italian region of Chianti, for the most famous old-style tourist cycling event in the world, the so-called "L'Eroica" ("the heroic" ).

Attracted by red wine, the famous "white road" through an amazing landscape just 15 kilometers outside the city of Siena, people from all over the world share their passion for cycling. This year, more than 5.400 participants dived into the past to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the race: old-fashioned clothes, dirty wheels and vintage bikes.

Four different routes with distances between 35 and 200 km wind through the vineyards of Val d'Orcia and Chianti, surrounded by wild animals and the true spirit of cycling. This unique event, the biggest in Italy and one of the most important in the world knows only few rules: only vintage bikes and instead of competition the true spirit of "L'Eroica": a genuine passion for cycling, nature and food.

A group of informal waste pickers search for scrap metal, plastic bags and glass bottles that they resell to recycling companies. The Nairobi City Council, overwhelmed by the increasing garbage generation in the city, cooperates with them and contributes with the heavy machinery needed to stir the rubbish.

Hundreds of storks overfly the dumpsite looking for leftovers. The last attempt made by the City Council to move the Dandora dumpsite to another location failed because the new location was nearby the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the huge presence of these birds could have caused security problems with the air traffic.

A man waits near the Nairobi River, which flows along the east side of the dumpsite, for the burning garbage to be completely consumed and collect the remaining scrap metal. This process generates toxic fumes and pollutes the river, significantly increasing the risk of airborne and waterborne diseases both for the waste pickers and for the neighbours.
