Ukraine: Brothers in War
Donetsk
By Lorenzo Giroffi
11 May 2015

This documentary encapsulates our seven-month long chronicle of the civil war in Ukraine's Donbass region – a silent war that, despite the declaration of two truces and the deafening silence of western media, continues to claim hundreds of victims.

We filmed and lived side by side either with pro-Russian rebels or with soldiers in the Ukrainian army. From Donetsk to Lugansk, passing by Debaltseve and Mariupol, we aimed to report the conflict and its hangover: from the drama of a population broken in two, the suffering of civilians, and the motivations of volunteers on both sides, to the risk of new and bloody catastrophes and the hellholes of illegal coal mines, new source of income for thousands of workers from the Donbass.

Shiite Iraqi Militia Defies US, ISIS

Karbala, Iraq
May 2, 2015

The Iraqi Shiite militia Saraya al-Salam (Peace Brigades), which is led by cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, held a military parade in Karbala in defiance of a recent US Congress bill to send weapons to Sunni and Kurdish fighters directly.
While fighters of various ages chanted slogans against the United States as well as ISIS, a member of the Provincial Council of Karbala who supports Sadr said in an interview that Saraya al-Salam are able to push ISIS out of the areas it still controls.

TRANSCRIPT

SOUNDBITE (Arabic, Man) Nasser Hassani, Member of the Provincial Council of Karbala
02:00 – 02:43

“In fact, this demonstration is spontaneous and came in support of the leader [Muqtada al-Sadr] to condemn the decision taken by the US – the different political parties in the US – to divide Iraq. This is the beginning of Iraq’s division, and the leader has mentioned this issue. On the other hand, concerning the liberation of Iraqi territories held by ISIS, we are ready to act upon the request of the leader. We have prepared ourselves and set an excellent example for each patriotic individual who loves Iraq and loves his country.”

Battle of Bakara Market
Mogadishu
By Noe Falk Nielsen
29 Apr 2015

The internationally recognised Somali Government, the Transitional Federal Government, had been under siege since the Ethiopian Army pulled out in January 2009. Protected by a small force of Ugandan and Burundian soldiers deployed as the African Union's Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) the government was functioning in a 25 km2 pocket in the capital, Mogadishu, consisting of the State House Complex, the port and the airport base, where AMISOM had their HQ. In the fall of 2010 Al Shabaab attempted to push the government and the AMISOM forces into the sea in a large offensive referred to as the Ramadan Offensive, but AMISOM held their ground and eventually fought back. One of the main turning points of the conflict appeared at the end of July and beginning of August 2011, where combined AMISOM and government forces managed to push Al Shabaab out of Mogadishu, leaving the group wiht only limited footholds in the north and east of the capital.
The present collection depicts the fighting on the first two days of the offensive, where AMISOM and government forces attacked the Bakara Market in the attempt to dislodge the group from it main stronghold in the city.

Tikrit, Iraq
April 1, 2014

Inside footage, recorded with a camera attached to a cameraman’s body, offers an intimate look at a battle between Iraqi forces and ISIS over control of the city of Tikrit. Dozens of fighters from the Federal Police Special Forces, the Iraqi Army and Shiite militias advance through an open field to the sounds of heavy gunshots and flying warplanes.

Combatants, shouting war cries in praise of Muslim Shiite saints, quickly run through marshes and between low hills before reaching heavily war damaged buildings. The fighters stop when some of them suspect a booby-trapped wire before eventually recommencing their advance.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced that his forces had recaptured the strategic city of Tikrit on Tuesday March 30, 2015. The official Iraqiya television station published a headline quoting the PM's words: “Tikrit has fallen to us. However, local sources in Tikrit say that ISIS still controls many parts of the city and that heavy fighting is still going on.
