High-Risk Education in Aleppo
Aleppo, Syria

Aleppo, Syria

Despite shelling and barrel bomb attacks, students and volunteer instructors are still showing up at al-Risala school in the rebel held Hanano area in the northern city of Aleppo, Syria.

With no or little resources, the teachers are trying to give students a basic education in the absence of a school curriculum in areas controlled by the Syrian opposition.

The school is located in a district which has been targeted in shelling and airstrikes. “The students and teachers are in danger, the building might be heavily damaged or even destroyed at any moment” says Ibrahim al-Ali, the school principal. “We have no choice but to keep operating at high risk. This is the situation in almost all schools in rebel held Aleppo”.

Interviews:

04:03
Nada, Teacher:
“The number of students is good, but we are short of instructors. Teachers are not available. Q: What are your main needs other than for teachers?
A: We actually need everything.. The school building needs restoration, the students have not received backpacks, the teachers have no support.. There’s a lack of everything.”

04:59
Abu Hassan, Teacher:
“I am the science teacher, I try my best to improve the scientific skills of the students whether in math or physics or chemistry. Q: How do you describe the student comprehension abilities?
A: Starting directly with the curriculum in books is impossible because the students did not have the chance to learn the basics. It’s been like a month since we started teaching them the basics, the simple operations such as addition and subtraction. Introduction to physics and introduction to chemistry, we are only teaching them the basics that they missed for now.”

05:43
Mohamed, Student:
“We are here in al-Risala School, in Hanano area.. We have few teachers, a teacher of mathematics and a teacher of religious education.. We have no other teachers, however they are trying to teach us the basics so we can understand the actual curriculum. I hope that Syria will be a safe and secure place again especially in Aleppo because Bachar al-Assad targets us with barrel bombs and has destroyed all areas of Aleppo. Even our instructors had to flee because of the massive shelling.”
Q: Did you see any fighter jets striking?
A: We’ve seen a lot, and barrel bombs are dropped over our heads.”

06:32
Zainab, Student:
“We have no books but they told us that they would bring us some. We came here to study but we have shortage of teachers. The teacher is trying his best to teach us. When winter comes we have no heaters and the windows are all damaged and we have no means to replace them. Every time we go out for recess helicopters come so they bring us back inside out of fear.”

07:04
Ibrahim al-Ali, School Principal:
“We are educating the students despite the lack of an educational system. Almost all teachers are volunteers. Some are university graduates, others have just graduated from school. They are all doing volunteer work with nothing in return. The condition of the school is miserable. The building needs restoration, electricity and water repairs. We face a persistent cut of electricity which is affecting the lighting in class rooms. We also need water tanks to store water. We are also expecting the problems which we went through last year such as lack of heaters and the windows destroyed because of the constant shelling and barrel bombs by the regime.”

Video shows aftermath of a barrel bomb attack on rebel held Hanano, an area in the northern city of Aleppo, Syria.
Volunteers from the "White Helmets" search and rescue organization responded after the bombing targeted a crowded market in central Hanano, leaving scores of dead and injured.

According to local activists in the opposition controlled part of Aleppo, Syrian regime forces have dropped numerous barrel bombs on residential areas since early April, targeting civilians and field hospitals.

On April 27, 2016 a bombing hit the "al-Quds" field hospital and killed over 50 people including Dr. Wassim Maaz, the only pediatrician remaining in rebel held Aleppo.

This video shows Free Syrian Army fighters preparing a grave to bury the body of a young Kurdish fighter, believed to be a member of the PYD, killed during a battle in a northern area of Aleppo, Syria. It is claimed in some reports that the PYD (Democratic Union Party) is affiliated with the Kurdish PKK in Turkey. The FSA accuses the PYD and PKK of collaborating with the government of Bashar al-Assad. The contributor who shot the video says the FSA also claims the Kurdish militia group is using child soldiers. The Assad regime has in the past admitted to providing support to the PYD.

Frustration and Defiance in Aleppo
Aleppo
By rami.zien
16 Feb 2016

A survivor in the rebel-held area of Aleppo expresses frustration at international support for their cause and defiance in the face of the latest assault by forces of the Assad government.

Ibrahim, Citizen:

On the latest updates we here in the Castello area of Aleppo I can say that there is kind of a drop in the fighting (FSA) brigades are bringing against this big offensive. They (the FSA) are not being strict in taking the decision to stop this farce and save us from the force that is threatening us everyday to cut the main road of Aleppo. I wish that everyone in Aleppo, civilians and fighters, would come up with a solution to stop this farce that is threatening the people inside Aleppo and specifically the liberated areas. We are subject to threatens day and night. As they say, the mother of a threatened person doesn’t sleep, however a mother of a dead person sleeps. Where are the solutions to stop the threatens? Where is the FSA? Why is it absent? What will it do? He (The FSA) is available with us in all the liberated areas that might be under siege at anytime, hopefully not but this is the truth for now.

03:34
Our situation now is a result of the dirty political money and I hope that this stops at some point.

04:00
Question: What about the support from Saudi Arabia and Turkey?

Answer: It is only words, saying that they support the Syrian people. however we have been left alone.

Question: what about the ceasefire?

Answer: Nothing at all. In fact every time there is a ceasefire and there are talks to interfere in the Syrian war, more people die. Just leave us alone! We do not want support from anybody. In fact we are able to manage ourselves and we will be fine. We do not want anyone saying that we support the Syrian people. The Syrian people are standing alone and no one supports us. All what we ask you is to provide us with anti-aircraft weapons or a decision that imposes a no-fly zone, and we can deal with the rest. We can give you their dead bodies and their heads in coffins made in Aleppo.

Question: What about the Russian offensives on your city?

Answer: They are trying to push the citizens to leave and abandon their hometown in Aleppo, They want to change the demographics of the area and replace the original citizens with new ones. They want to spread fear all over the area as if they are telling us to revolt against the fighting brigades in our city. They are pushing the situation to be more complex in forcing us to flee our lands and change the demographics. The Rojava area is the biggest proof of what they are trying to do. This is proof that they are pushing Syria towards division.

Question: Why are you still here and have not taken refuge elsewhere yet?

Answer: This is my hometown, where do you want me to move? This is my town and I will keep defending it in my own way and by all the means available to me to do so until I die or win.

Aleppo Residents Flee Siege
Aleppo
By Mahmoud Alhaji Othman
10 Feb 2016

Footage shot on Feb 10, 2016 shows busses transferring refugees from rural areas in northern Aleppo to a safer place in "Dar Ta izzah" in the west of the city. The area has been bombed by Russian aircraft as military forces of the government of Bashar al-Assad try to encircle it. Thousands of people have fled the area and headed for the Turkish border.

The Free Syrian Army was in charge of this transfer and had to coordinate with Kurdish forces and the al-Nusra Front to ensure the safe passage of the busses through areas that they control.

Kurdish Army and Free Syrian Army fighters gather on the outskirts of Tal Abiyad while the battle to wrestle the frontier town from ISIS remains underway. The offensive launched by the fighting groups was eventually successful with anti-ISIS forces taking full control of the town.

Tal Abiyad was a strategic conduit for supplies going to the Islamic State Group's self-declared capital of Raqqa. By capturing the town, YPG and FSA forces dealt a strategic blow to ISIS' hold on northereastern Syria
