Khartoum, Sudan | March 27, 2012

Sudanese army official spokesman, Colonel Al-Sawarmi Khaled Saad, told reporters on Tuesday, March 27, that the Sudanese Armed Forces are in full control of the disputable area of Heglig, condemning what he described as "wrongful aggression" of the Southern Sudanese troops at the borders.
Saad told reporters at the headquarters of Sudan's Ministry of Defense in Khartoum that the area is completely free from any troops of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) or the rebels contrary to what some media said.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic) - Sudan's Armed Forces Official Spokesman, Colonel Al-Sawarmi Khaled Saad:
"We believe it is a wrongful aggression within our borders and inside our lands in the area of Heglig, which is not a disputable area. In terms of demarcation and it not controversial that it follows the 1956 northern borders. We confirm that the Armed Forces completely control this area, Heglig, and that there are not any troops there who belong to Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) or rebels in this area. The Armed Forces are in full control of the area contrary to what some media said that it's controlled by South Sudan, which is baseless and incorrect. This area is 100% northern and its belonging to Sudan has never been disputed."

The official statement comes a day after clashes broke out between the armed forces of Sudan and South Sudan in disputed border regions, although Sudan’s President Omar Hassan al-Bashir is due to meet his southern counterpart Salva Kiir on April 3 in the southern capital Juba in an attempt to resolve the disputes between the two countries.
