Four people were killed and 27 others were injured in a massive fire that broke out in a crowded commercial district in Egypt's Nile Delta city of Tanta on Sunday night, April 22, Health Ministry reported on Monday.
The fire ruined thirteen stores and completely destroyed a five-story department store of Almasnoat Almisryia Company (Egyptian Products Co.) and the nearby shops.
Ambulances and firefighting vehicles rushed to the area before the fire extended to other stores.
Tanta officials announced that the government will pay EGP 20,000 in compensation to the family members of each victim and EGP 6,000 to each injured person.
[1 USD = 6.04 EGP] Loses are estimated at millions of Egyptian pounds while the source of the fire has not been determined yet.
Tanta is the fifth largest city in Egypt with an estimated population of 492,000.
