Opposition figures in Lebanon accuse the Syrian regime of being responsible for the Wednesday bombing near Dama Rose hotel where the UN monitors stay in Damascus.
Rima Frihan, a Syrian opposition figure, living in Beirut, said that the regime was the only one that would benefit from this operation and it was a warning message to the international community and the Security Council.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic) – Rima Frihan, Syrian opposition figure:
“As for what happened at the hotel, the Syrian regime seems to be responsible for it because it is the only party that can benefit from this operation, although the UN monitors would have normally left the country within a few days. So, it is a message that the Syrian regime wants to deliver to the whole world, the international community and the Security Council. The Syrian regime wants to use the incident and exploit it the way it wants. The Free Army made an operation that targeted the regime army leadership, which is another story. Geographically, the place targeted regime leadership is far from the hotel. However, the whole area is security cordoned, which means that the media and activists cannot approach to make sure of the information. The next few hours will reveal what happened as there will reactions from all parties.”

Although the Free Syrian Army (FSA) announced responsibility for the blast, saying it targeted a regime military compound near the hotel, Frihan says that this operation is different from the one that targeted the hotel of UN monitors.
After claiming responsibility for the blast, the FSA said the bombing was carried out in response to massacres of Syrian civilians by government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad.
