Demand for Headstones rises in Damascus
Damascus, Syria

Bab Al Jabiya neighborhood in Old Damascus, Syria

Story:

The ongoing Syrian civil war resulted in the deaths of more than 150 thousand people
Those numbers pushed the demand for headstones to rise. There is another facet to the war in Syria where a group of people saw themselves getting more work and revenue despite the financial hardship experienced by most of the Syrian people. You can find in the Bab Al Jabiya souk several workshops where they make headstones of various shapes and sizes depending on the financial situation of the family. Due to the financial hardship that many people are facing in Syria the sizes of the headstones are shrinking.

Interviews / Translated Transcription:

Mo'taz Al Aytouni, Headstones workshop owner:
"The demand is small, before the turnout was good but the high prices of the materials used and the distress experienced by the people led in replacing large tomb stones with smaller ones. There is a demand but from what we keep hearing there should be a much higher demand."

Samer, headstone sculpter/carver: "This line of work depends on the hammer. Drilling on the marble carving and the presence of decorations on the headstones is expensive."

Ziad, works in marble inscription:
"Before the events death was unusual but since the war started there is an increased demand and therefor there is a lot of work."

US to provide Lebanon with more than ...
Beirut, Lebanon
By Video Cairo Sat
15 May 2013

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman met on Tuesday, May 14, with Philip Gordon, a special assistant to United States President Barack Obama for Middle East issues.

Gordon announced that the US will be providing the Lebanese government with USD 10 million to be added to the USD 36 million offered as part of a financial assistance package to help the Syrian refugees.

Suleiman and Gordon discussed the relationship between Lebanon and the U.S., regional issues, developments in Syria and the increasing number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, according to the statement.

Gordon, a coordinator for the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf Region, praised Suleiman’s role in preserving stability in Lebanon and stressed the importance of holding parliamentary elections scheduled for June, according to a statement issued by Suleiman’ office.

Gordon also condemned Hezbollah’s involvement in Syria, fighting on behalf of the Assad regime, which risks drawing Lebanon into the conflict and is counter to the Lebanese government’s policies,” the statement said.

According to a U.S. Embassy statement, Gordon expressed his country’s grave concern about the situation in Syria and condemned continued shelling of Lebanese territory from Syria.

He called on all parties in the region to avoid any actions that would exacerbate the crisis in Syria, increase the propensity for spillover violence, and negatively affect civilian populations,” the Embassy statement noted.

Gordon said his country urged all international donors to help Lebanon meet their obligations to the refugees.

The Embassy added that Gordon praised Beirut and the generosity of the Lebanese people for hosting and supporting thousands of refugees in Lebanon.

He reiterated Washington’s support for the so-called “Baabda Declaration” and Lebanon’s disassociation policy.

For his part, President Suleiman thanked the United States for its constant support to Lebanon in all the fields.

Gordon also held separate talks with House Speaker Nabih Berri in the presence of U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly.

Gordon said the U.S. would maintain its support for the Lebanese Army in order to enhance the military’s capabilities along the border and inside Lebanon.

December 2, 2012
This morning in Aleppo, a leader of the Syrian regime's forces was killed by FSA fighters. The FSA fighters found the soldier's diaries in their office and took photos of some pages.

At 6:15 shooting started heavily toward our location from the cement factory.
We all mobilized and the food car was giving us food, and then it went to the free area and it had to pass by the Juvenile prison which is next to the cement factory.
We stayed mobilized until the sniping stopped and the food car left the place and the danger was gone, thank God. It seems like we are going to live.
Wednesday 5/9
That difficult night is gone in a good way and things became calm after approximately an hour, we stayed awake all night especially after the fall of mortars near the school.
When the sun started to rise, the sniper started to shoot, which is annoying because it limits our movements. He was sniping from the cement factory toward us.
Thank God that he doesn't have a night telescope so he can't target us at night.
Here I am at 6:30 after I called my sister Laila on the phone and told her that am not in the infantry school, and she's the only one who knows that.

Surviving In A Ghost Town, Halep, Syr...
Aleppo, Syria
By Michele Pero
02 Dec 2012

Downtown Halep, quarters of Bustan al-Pasha and Sakhour, December 2012.
The town is partially controlled by the brigades of the Free Syria Army. Snipers, hidden in isolated buildings, necessitate a fast crossing through the large and open avenues. Some people try to continue their normal life downtown, still living in their houses, even if the majority have left for the refugee camps at the borders of the country.

MIGs and helicopters of the Bashar Al Assad regime are continuously releasing rockets and barrel-bombs over the buildings. A quick look at the sky, some strikes, the blast and gray smoke lifts not too far from where we are. Another building hit, some people wounded and injured will be soon added to the list.

Daily life in Halep is pretty scary. The regime is now releasing big barrels filled with explosives. They release these bombs over the town, anywhere they like. No targets are aimed. They throw them here and there. No one is safe in any shelter. Shelters actually don’t work. Halep is a very ancient town and buildings are very weak. In spite of that, some citizens are still keeping their homes there, still trying to lead a normal life, together with the rebels of the Free Syria Army which fight on two front lines: one against the regular forces of the regime, one other against the Kurdish minority which supports the regime. In the middle, the citizens of Halep, try to survive in a ghost town, partially destroyed, under the daily bombings of such madness.
