Peshmerga Forces Battle ISIS in Sinjar

By Balint Szlanko
25 May 2015

Kurdish peshmerga forces have been battling Islamic State militants outside the city of Sinjar since January.

The peshmerga are holding the heights to the north of the city, while IS controls the city itself. There is no sign of any civilians left in the city.

The warfare is largely static: both sides are stuck in their positions, sniping at each other, while IS occasionally tries to storm some of the Kurdish frontal positions, or lob mortars across their lines into the rear.

Low on heavy weapons themselves, the peshmerga typically call in coalition airstrikes when they spot IS forces moving around. On 25 and 26 May, when this report was filmed, the Kurds called in nearly a dozen airstrikes.

According to a report posted on the website of US Central Command said that on 26 May “near Sinjar, an airstrike struck an ISIL tactical unit, destroying two ISIL buildings and two ISIL heavy machine guns.”

The city of Sinjar is important because sits on a road between Mosul, Iraq, and Raqqa, Syria, the two biggest cities controlled by IS. The militants use the road to move personnel and equipment between the two major theatres of war.

The 12th peshmerga brigade, which has been on the lines since the beginning of May, lost 13 killed and nearly a hundred wounded in their first three weeks of deployment.

At least six people were killed in an airstrike that targeted the northeastern Syrian city of Raqqa.

This video shows a civilian neighborhood in the aftermath of the strike. Rescue workers use sledge hammers and excavation vehicles to remove the rubble and search for survivors amid building that were almost completely destroyed.

Raqqa is considered the capital of the government proclaimed by the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS.

An ISIS fighter appears in the footage, saying that these strikes will neither weaken nor frighten his group.

Local residents said that the Syrian regime carried out this airstrike. Transterra Media could not verify these claims. The regime has repeatedly targeted the city since it lost control over it in March 2013. More recently, an international coalition led by the United States has launched airstrikes against ISIS positions and troops in Iraq and Syria since September 2014.

After an airstrike, a wounded young girl arrived in a Aleppo hospital. She was carried in by an FSA soldier who found her lying next to her deceased mother in the street after the bombs hit. The young girl was covered in blood and peppered with shrapnel, screaming for her mother while her mother's corpse was carried into the hospital.

Doctors worked frantically to extract shrapnel from the little girl’s body. After giving her drugs to calm her down, they proceeded to the X-Ray room. The young girl's father arrived from work and discovered his injured daughter laying on the surgical table, then collapsed and began to cry.
