Egypt’s Independent Newspapers Go on ...
Cairo, Egypt
By Video Cairo Sat
04 Dec 2012

Several independent Egyptian newspapers went on strike for one day on Tuesday, December 4, in protest against the constitutional declaration and the draft constitution. Twelve newspapers suspended publication and five TV channels announced that they will go off-air on Wednesday.

Egypt Independent, Al-Masry Al-Youm's English news website, has completely halted work and covered its main page with a statement reading "You are reading this message because Egypt Independent objects to continued restrictions on media liberties, especially after hundreds of Egyptians gave their lives for freedom and dignity."

The newly drafted constitution, which was passed on November 30 by the Islamist-dominated Constituent Assembly and is set to be voted on in a referendum on December 15, does not include articles against the imprisonment of journalists in cases related to freedom of expression as demanded by journalists.

The newspapers that went on strike on Tuesday include: Al-Masry Al-Youm, Al-Watan, Al-Tahrir, Al-Wafd, Al-Youm 7, Al-Dostour, Al-Shorouk, Al-Sabah, Al-Ahaly, Al-Ahrar, Al-Fagr and Osbooa. Among the TV channels that are expected to go strike on Wednesday, with blank screens broadcasting in place of content: ONTV channels, CBC and Modern channels, and Dream TV channels.

The Journalists Syndicate's executive council withdrew its representatives from the constituent assembly in mid-November after its recommendations and suggestions were ignored by the assembly.

Mid East Political Turmoil: Syria to ...
Cairo, Egypt

29 Nov 2012

Over the past year the world has watched as the fractured political situation in Syria has dissolved into civil war, with over 40,000 deaths as Bashar al-Assad's military forces pound the Free Syrian Army and rebel strongholds, while thousands of refugees stream into Lebanon and Turkey. The shear numbers of escaping Syrians have prompted Lebanon to request help from the UN to care for the displaced people.

Meanwhile, Egyptians overthrew Mubarrak's entrenched regime, and then democratically elected a new government headed by the controversial Muslim Brotherhood party's Muhammad Morsi, whose presidency has been met with mass opposition.
