Remote Schooling Around the World
Rome
By Rocco Rorandelli
23 Mar 2020

According to UNESCO, by the end of March 2020, nearly 1.5 billion children around the world were at home due to the COVID-19 lockdowns. For students and their parents, remote learning became a new challenge. For schools, it has been time to experiment with new forms of teaching. Since the first pandemic wave, schools in various countries have responded in different ways to curb the infection. In September 2020, according too UNESCO; schools remained closed for half the world’s students due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These closures impact especially the low-income and are vulnerable children, those who have less support to follo remote classes. In order to recount the new reality of school from home, I contacted parents around the world to let me enter in their homes during the daily routine of their children's study. During video calls, with the parent’s help, I explored the study spaces, framed the image and photographed my phone. What I collected is a series of family snapshots, of reclamation of a space now used for school, of interactions with family members, but also of solitude. Visually, images are blurry and unsharp, the distance from he subject is measured also with a loss in quality. For me, this is a parallele with remote learning, which is channeled through devices. Scholars state that home learning is effective if students have the technical means and the support of the family. When these are missing, the risk of dropping out of school is high.
