As Al Shabaab controlled most of the surrounding areas there were only two accespoints to Mogadishu, the airport and the port. During the famine in the second half of 2011 most of the food arrived on ships through the port. Here a ship is being offloaded in the port of Mogadishu on 28 September 2011.

Mogadishu in 2011 was a city in ruins marked by decades of war and strife. The Somalis adapted and went on with their lives despite the appalling conditions. Here the Somali Minister of Defence in a meeting with foreign contractors at a room in Gashandiga (Ministry of Defence buildings) that was partly destroyed during the battle of Gashandiga.
