Greek Anti-Austerity Protest
Athens, Greece
By Nicola Zolin
13 Jul 2015

Anti-austerity protests swept through Athens the day after Greek Prime Minister Tsipras signed a framework deal set out by Eurozone leaders - a deal he said he "didn't believe in, but that was necessary for the future of the country." Experts, including representatives of the IMF, acknowledged that the deal was in many ways worse than the deal Mr. Tsipras set before the Greek people in a referendum.

Two days after the protests, the Greek parlaiment approved the deal, keeping Greece in the Eurozone, but passing reforms many consider draconian for a country already exhausted with austerity and rising unemployment.

Egyptian Doctors Strike, Hold Symboli...
Cairo, Egypt
By U.S. Editor
08 Nov 2012

Hundreds of Egyptian doctors marched on Thursday, November 8, from Omar Makram Mosque in Tahrir Square to the Egyptian State TV Building (Maspero), holding a symbolic funeral for the Ministry of Health as part of their ongoing strike calling for healthcare reforms.
On the 39th day of their strike the protesting doctors wore black clothes, holding in their hands white coats to represent coffins.
They shouted slogans and raised banners demanding social justice and better hospital security.
Their major demands include an increase of healthcare share in the general budget to 15%, better health services, increased security at health facilities and higher pay.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic) – Mohamed Abdel-Sattar, a striking doctor:
“We decided today to hold a symbolic march entitled ‘the funeral of Egyptian healthcare’ due to the Health Ministry’s disregard of the strike’s three legitimate demands: to increase the healthcare budget, to increase security at hospitals and to implement the cadre of doctors within three years, not now. We want to live a decent life like everyone.”

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic) – Amr Shura, media coordinator of the doctors’ strike committee:
“Today is the 39th day of the doctors’ strike. We tried everything. We held marches, protests, marches, etc. We’re not required to provide solutions but we did. However, there was no response. Today, we tell the health minister that he’s failed.”

A number of political forces voiced support for the mock funeral procession of the striking doctors, protesting against alleged deteriorating healthcare and negligent government.
The doctors threatened to escalate the situation if their demands are not met.
The April 6 Youth Movement, Revolutionary Socialists, National Front for Justice and Democracy and Youth for Freedom and Justice are among the forces taking part in the march.
The doctors’ partial strike started on October 1 after being approved on September 21 at a Doctors Syndicate emergency general assembly meeting.

Cairo, Egypt
By U.S. Editor
09 Oct 2012

Thousands of Egyptian Copts marched from the district of Shubra near downtown Cairo to the state radio and television building, on Tuesday evening, October 9, marking the first anniversary of the Maspero clashes between protesting Copts and army soldiers that resulted in 27 deaths.
The protestors were chanting national songs with music playing in the background, shouting statements against former the Field Marshall who was the head of Egypt’s ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) at that time.
Not only Copts who participated in the march, but a lot of Muslims marched with them to show solidarity with their fellow Egyptians, all calling for retaliation for the victims of Maspero clashes.
During the march, some shouted statements like “The people want execution of the Field Marshall," while others carried banners of Tantawi and his deputy Sami Anan execution ropes around their necks.
They demanded justice for those killed when military and security forces violently dispersed a Coptic sit-in outside the state TV building against assaults on Coptic churches at the time.
The Maspero Youth Union, which was formed in March 2011 to defend the rights of Egypt’s Coptic minority, organized the march while many other movements participated in the march like the April 6 Youth Movement, the Democratic Revolutionary Alliance, Hamdeen Sabbahi’s new Popular Current Part and other coalitions and parties.
The deadly incident occurred when a peaceful march against the destruction of a church in Aswan and the authorities' subsequent inaction was confronted by the military near the building in Maspero, central Cairo, on October 9, 2011, killing at least 27.
