14 Nov 2012

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi met on Wednesday, November 14, with the European Union's high representative for foreign affairs and security policy Catherine Ashton at the Presidential Palace in Cairo. The officials discussed possible programs aimed at increasing the cooperation between the EU and Egypt. Their talks focused largely on investments, tourism, international politics, and regional issues of common interest.

The meeting was attended by Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr and President Assistant for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Dr Essam El Hadad.

Morsi then met with the EU delegation, headed by Ashton, where they discussed political and economic issues affecting the country after the Arab Spring. They also discussed possible ways of finding a resolution to the Syrian conflict without foreign intervention, in addition to the Palestinian Cause.

After the meeting, the Egyptian President announced that the European Union has approved a five billion euro ($6.3 billion) 'support package' to Egypt over a two year period to be disbursed through the EU's finance institutions.

Ashton participated yesterday in the second meeting of EU-Arab foreign ministers over Syria, held at the Arab League in Cairo where she affirmed that the EU is highly supportive of democracy in “Arab Spring” countries.
