Demolition at Sion Koliwada
Sion, Mumbai, India
By Javed Iqbal
06 Nov 2012

The original inhabitants of Mumbai, the Kolis, faced another demolition drive for a development project in Sion Koliwada.

As per law, a builder requires 70% of the residents of a registered society to give consent to the project but in Sion Koliwada, the residents have repeatedly asserted that the builder used forged documents to claim a majority for the project.

There are over 80 re-development projects in Mumbai where residents have repeatedly claimed that the builder used fraudulent means to claim consent.

Low-Income Families Face Evictions in...
Milan, Italy
By Transterra Editor
27 Oct 2012

Vulnerable families in Milan, Italy, have become victims of extensive eviction in the city. A cut in government housing subsidies in 2012, combined with widespread unemployment and a high cost of living have contributed to the more than 67,790 evictions last year and estimated 300,000 more families at risk in 2013. A photojournalist followed several families through their unique eviction journeys, from their homes to the streets, foster homes or hotels. Often, illegal immigrants are particularly suseptible to evictions, as landlords raise their rents because they know that they are unable to report them to authorities.

Tawergha Houses Looted (3-24)
Tawergha, Misrata, Libya
By Karim Mostafa
26 Feb 2012

2011 meant big changes for Libya. After forty years in power, former dictator Muammar Gaddafi was ousted from power. But it took an ugly war, and Libyans are now facing the challenge of rebuilding and unifying their country. Among those suffering the consequences are the population of Tawergha, a coastal city of 30,000 inhabitants. During the war, many Tawerghans fought alongside Gaddafi’s forces. Many men were part of laying siege on the neighbouring Misrata, a city that suffered heavily during the months of fighting. When the war was nearing its end, Tawergha was captured by rebel groups from Misrata, who expelled the population and destroyed the houses. The inhabitants were forced to flee; today, many men are imprisoned while women, children and others are dispersed in refugee camps across the country. What will happen to them? The Tawerghans want to return to their homes, but the rebels guarding the city say that they can never come back.
