SOUNDBITE (Arabic, Man) Qassem Musleh, Commander of Ali al-Akbar Brigade, part of the Popular Mobilization military umbrella group

02:55- 05:00

“After we started scouting deep territories held by the enemy, we are entering these territories to know the enemy’s military formations and weapons. The latest information we have received was that there is a large number of foreign fighters in this area. Baiji area has practically fallen militarily and we have surrounded the enemy in these areas, which are in the range of our fire. These areas are Maleha, Baiji and what is known here as Mazraa Watwan.
Thanks be to God, several of their vehicles have been burnt and a bridge, which was their only outlet and provision line, has been controlled. Last night we managed to… before that we were able to enter the area of Mazraa, which was the most dangerous area. It was one of their training posts and fortified strongholds.
We were able to infiltrate and discover what the enemy had. However, we were scared of the booby traps they had set up. Today, thanks be to God, the engineering corps advanced with excavation vehicles and opened the road. We were able to march ahead and hit the fence surrounding the orchard, which was a real obstacle that they considered unreachable. Thanks be to God, we managed to break the first wall that surrounded the orchard and infiltrated that territory with a large number of snipers and light vehicles. We managed to strike the enemy and inflict heavy losses on it.
Thanks be to God, we managed to subdue them, but we were also supported by artillery shelling and airstrikes, which is why were able to reach this point without suffering any significant losses.”

Inside footage, recorded with a camera attached to a cameraman’s body, offers an intimate look at a battle between Iraqi forces and ISIS over control of the city of Tikrit. Dozens of fighters from the Federal Police Special Forces, the Iraqi Army and Shiite militias advance through an open field to the sounds of heavy gunshots and flying warplanes.

Combatants, shouting war cries in praise of Muslim Shiite saints, quickly run through marshes and between low hills before reaching heavily war damaged buildings. The fighters stop when some of them suspect a booby-trapped wire before eventually recommencing their advance.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced that his forces had recaptured the strategic city of Tikrit on Tuesday March 30, 2015. The official Iraqiya television station published a headline quoting the PM's words: “Tikrit has fallen to us. However, local sources in Tikrit say that ISIS still controls many parts of the city and that heavy fighting is still going on.

Houthi rebels took control of the coast guard center in Hodeidah, Yemen's second largest port town and fourth largest city, after heavy clashes with Yemeni special forces on February 27. Fighting went on for six hours, beginning at dawn when the Houthis bombed the centre with heavy weapons. Military sources did not confirm any injuries.

The Houthis took control over most of Hodeidah in October 2014 but there were pockets of resistance such as the base of the coast guard of the Yemeni Navy.

Hodeidah is Yemen's second largest coastal town in Yemen and is of strategic importance due to its situation on the Red Sea, between the Gulf of Aden and the Suez Canal.

Sunni tribesmen, belonging to the Markha al-Alya tribe of the southern Yemeni province of Shabwa, announced today that they are closing their border with the neighboring al-Baydaa province. Situated to the west of Shabwa, al-Baydaa has been the scene of fierce battles between the Houthis and local tribesmen, who are trying to prevent the Houthis from advancing south.

In their announcement the Markha al-Alya tribe emphatically rejected the constitutional declaration of the Houthis and banned any military group from entering Shabwa. They have positioned their fighters along the border and installed sentries on the Farsha passage, the road which connects the neighboring provinces.

The tribesmen assured that they will defend their land to the death and not allow it to become a thoroughfare for Houthis and other armed groups to transport their soldiers and weapons. They are working in conjunction with the local authorities who support their mission to defend Shabwa.

"Based on the agreement among the tribe leaders, dignitaries and local authorities, we announce that we refuse the constitutional declaration made by the Houthis. We support the constitutionally legitimate authorities and will not accept any agreement outside the consensus among political powers in Yemen. Our stance regarding the Shabwa province follows that of the governor. It is guided by the governor of Shabwa as well as the security committee and the tribes in Shabwa and the regions of Hadramoot and Muhar al-Shabwa. We will stand against anyone who wants to use our province as a gate for chaos, whether they are armed militias, tribes or [any other] groups. The aftermath of airstrikes in the Libyan town of Zuwarah.

Large food supplies were destroyed and infrastructure severely damaged when missiles landed on a warehouse for food storage and a chemical factory.

At least eight people were killed and 24 others wounded, including 10 African workers.

These airstrikes were carried out on December 2 by the forces of retired General Khalifa Haftar, who are trying to recapture areas in east Libya from Islamist rebels. Another wave of airstrikes, 10
days later, targeted areas in Zuwarah’s outskirts near the border with Tunisia.

Residents also expressed their anger that General Haftar’s attacks are harming civilians.

Rebel leaders accused Egypt of providing Haftar’s forces with warplanes used in the attacks.

The recent series of airstrikes also targeted a rebel-held international airport in in the outskirts of Tripoli. The spokesman of the rebel security force that controls the airport said that the bombings
were carried out during two consecutive days. According to the spokesman, the attacks targeted the airport’s runway, causing minor injuries and damaging civilian homes near the airport.

A bloody conflict has pitted two Libyan governments against each other since August. The country is torn between militias that were once united to oust dictator Muammar Qaddafi.

Despite recent United Nations mediation to broker a peace accord, fighting between the warring factions continues to weaken this fragile country. The prosperity to which Libyans have long aspired seem to many like a far-fetched hope.

SOUNDBITE

(Arabic, man) Unnamed employee

(00:30) We were working normally at the offices when were caught by surprise by missiles falling on the warehouses, killing 8 persons and wounding 14 others. These warehouses provided food supplies from Sabrata to Ras Jdair (00:54).

(Arabic, man) Issa al-Mansuri, a resident of Zuwarah

(01:39) We condemn these bombings by Haftar’s air force. They are targeting civilians and innocent foreigners who have nothing to do with [this conflict]. These airstrikes are destroying infrastructure and will not solve the problem. We want a ceasefire by any possible means, we do not want airstrikes in addition to the fighting. We have enough weapons to hold war on different front lines and they are bringing in weapons and pilots from abroad. How will they solve the problem this way? (02:05).

(Arabic, man) Mubarak al-Nayli, resident of Tripoli

(02:48) Life in Tripoli is relatively stable but certain armed groups are breaching security by bombing indiscriminately (03:01).

(03:07) This has [scared] school children and caused a fuel shortage, and we faced a shortage in electricity, too, but it is fixed now (03:18).

(Arabic, man) Unnamed resident of Tripoli

(03:46) Instead of bombing military bases, [Haftar] is targeting the homes of civilians who have nothing to do with military action (04:04).

(Arabic, man) Al-Sader al-Turki, Spokesperson of rebel security unit at Mitiga Airport

(04:48) The airstrikes carried out by the so-called Haftar’s group did not affect our morale. These warplanes do not belong to the Libyan air force; they were brought from another country (05:13).
