‘We try to make Bab Al-Azizia safe, but it’s not safe. Recently we found four bodies. Three of them were women and all of them had been shot in the head.

My militia helped to make a database of everyone living here. There’s more than 300 families and each one has its number spray painted on the wall next to its home. We gave a copy of the database to the interior ministry but never heard anything back.’

Clashes continued Wednesday in Lebanon's northern city of Tripoli, between residents in the Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen neighborhoods who are loyal to opposing sides in Syria's civil war. In response, Prime Minister Mikati called on the Lebanese people to disassociate themselves from Syria's conflict and refrain from resorting to violence. Meanwhile, in Aleppo the conflict rages on; neighborhoods are reduced to rubble and children play in the remnants of a bombed-out school yard.

Surviving In A Ghost Town, Halep, Syria
Aleppo, Syria
By U.S. Editor
02 Dec 2012

Downtown Halep, quarters of Bustan al-Pasha and Sakhour, December 2012.
The town is partially controlled by the brigades of the Free Syria Army. Snipers, hidden in isolated buildings, necessitate a fast crossing through the large and open avenues. Some people try to continue their normal life downtown, still living in their houses, even if the majority have left for the refugee camps at the borders of the country.

MIGs and helicopters of the Bashar Al Assad regime are continuously releasing rockets and barrel-bombs over the buildings. A quick look at the sky, some strikes, the blast and gray smoke lifts not too far from where we are. Another building hit, some people wounded and injured will be soon added to the list.

Daily life in Halep is pretty scary. The regime is now releasing big barrels filled with explosives. They release these bombs over the town, anywhere they like. No targets are aimed. They throw them here and there. No one is safe in any shelter. Shelters actually don’t work. Halep is a very ancient town and buildings are very weak. In spite of that, some citizens are still keeping their homes there, still trying to lead a normal life, together with the rebels of the Free Syria Army which fight on two front lines: one against the regular forces of the regime, one other against the Kurdish minority which supports the regime. In the middle, the citizens of Halep, try to survive in a ghost town, partially destroyed, under the daily bombings of such madness.

A few short blocks from Dar al Shifaa hospital, destroyed just last week, an Aleppo school was also targeted by government forces, reducing the area to rubble in the early dawn.

Zachariah, a volunteer at the hospital told the photographer last October, "Even in the middle of death, happiness can still rise," in reference to his upcoming wedding with Bushra. The two had been married for about two weeks when she was killed. Now he spends his days alone in the ruins of the hospital, mourning his wife.

Fleeing ongoing violence, the sheer numbers of Syrian refugees have prompted Lebanon to request help from the UN to care for the displaced people.

Following months of routine shelling, the “liberated” Syrian town of Al Bab bands together in an attempt to grasp a bit of normalcy for their children. Since August, six schools have been shelled in Assad’s escalated aerial bombardment, and class has been moved to underground bunkers and basements, adapting to the times. Many parents fear sending their children to school, but now community members are volunteering their time in order to safely get the kids out of the house... and back to school.
