WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT

A mass burial site was discovered near the city of Samarra, central Iraq. According to interviewed Iraqi army officers, the dead bodies belong to civilians and soldiers who were apparently executed. The area has been recently retaken from ISIS, which has led the Iraqi military to assume that the victims were killed by the militant group.

Footage shows excavation vehicles digging up partially decomposed bodies as well as interviews with military officers explaining how the mass graves were discovered.

TRANSCRIPT

SOUNDBITE (Arabic, Man) Adib al-Khazraji, Local Resident
04:01 – 04:19

“If this shows anything at all, it shows ISIS’ treachery and brutality, with which the beloved Iraqi people have become familiar. We ask God almighty to give the [victims’] families patience and help achieve the victory of virtue against these criminal assassins.”

SOUNDBITE (Arabic, Man) Ali al-Saadi, Iraqi Army Officer
04:20 – 07:17

“Peace be upon you and God’s prayers be upon Prophet Mohamad. We are now in the district overseen by the 17th Brigade 17, 2nd Regiment, which is undertaking operations in Samarra. This area where are now standing was controlled by the zealous ISIS gangs. After we liberated and controlled this land, checkpoints were set up along a distance of four Km, from the area Imam Mohammad to Mahatat Balad crossroad. While patrols were being conducted in the district under our jurisdiction, we discovered depression in the soil after the rainfall yesterday. We dug the ground up and discovered two mass graves. The first grave contains four bodies of people wearing civilians clothing. Today, we discovered the burial site behind us. We discovered the bodies of people who had been wearing military uniforms. I believe that they have been buried for a long time – several months.
This morning we dug out the first batch of bodies, which were sent to the General Hospital of Balad. They were placed in the morgue, waiting to be identified with the help of the police directorate in Balad.
We thank the police directorate in Balad. Yesterday, we called the police commander there, Colonel Abdullah, who asked officers in Mahatat Balad police station to be present at the scene of the incident, or where these bodies are located. They [the police] received the bodies from us – we transported the bodies. We delivered the bodies to the hospital and the investigation was conducted by the police force of Mahattat Balad.
Now, we will send the bodies that are still here to the Balad hospital. We will deliver the bodies to the relevant authorities. They could be identified with the help of media outlets and delivered to their relatives. In case the bodies were not handed over to their families, they will be buried by relevant authorities. We shall continue to work as we are working now. We will keep searching for these martyrs. We are now safe in these areas thanks to their blood, which watered these lands. Here, it was difficult even for a car to pass through.”

SOUNDBITE (Arabic, Man) Brigadier-General Maad Beday Faraj, Commander of the 17th Brigade.”
07:18 – 08:50

“In the name of God, the merciful, the compassionate. Yesterday, we were notified by the Popular Mobilization forces, which are present in the district overseen by the First Regiment, 17th Infantry Brigade, and Samarra operations headquarters. We were notified of the appearance of a mass grave following rainfall two days ago. Part of these bodies appeared. The burial site was dug up and we were notified about this. As you can see, we are present with members of the Salahuddine provincial council. The office of the prime minister was also notified in order to bring in a specialized forensic medical team who could identify the remains of the bodies by taking samples from them to match them with DNA samples. So far, from what we have in front of us, we can tell that these people were [executed]. They had been blindfolded and their hands were tied behind their backs. They were thrown in this mass grave after they were executed.
This area is located in the south of the administrative district of Balad, specifically in the area of Tal al-Thahab.
After the bodies were inspected and the families recognized them, it was found out that one of them was a military who was in this district. Now, there a search is being conducted to find other burial sites in the same area.
Brigadier-General Maad Beday Faraj, Commander of the 17th Brigade"

Iraqi army and Shia militia fighters say they have discovered a mass grave in Saadiya, in northeast Diyala province, containing at least 23 bodies. They believe five of the dead are Peshemerga soldiers and the remainders are Iraqi police officers. Peshmerga intelligence officials told the Iraqi army that they believed there to be a mass grave in this location, based on information obtained from ISIS prisoners. According to the Peshmerga, ISIS fighters executed the policemen and Peshmerga soldiers when they took control of Saadiya. The Iraqi army, working with the Peshmerga and Shia militias recaptured the area in November 2014.

According to the verdict read by an ISIS fighter before the execution, Mohammad Mousa al-Jasem confessed to stepping on the Quran during a quarrel with his parents.
The man was executed because “he stepped on the Quran, not because he hit his mother,” the fighter says to bystanders.

Shot List

  1. Various of public execution.

2 .SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Unnamed ISIS fighter with covered face reading execution verdict

“He stepped on God’s Book [the Quran]. He took a knife and wanted to slip his mother’s throat. God’s verdict [has been taken] by the Islamic Court. The so-called Mohammad Mousa al-Jassem confessed that, [during] a quarrel with his mother and father, he beat them and tried to kill [his mother] by placing a knife on her throat.

“She held God’s Book to deter him, but he took the Book, threw it and stepped on it and cursed God almighty.

“We shall implement God’s verdict, not because he beat his mother, but because he stepped on God’s Book.

[reading a verse from the Quran] And if you ask them, they will surely say, “‘We were only conversing and playing. Say, ‘Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?’

“‘Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon one faction of you - We will punish another faction because they were criminals.’”

[Another fighter addresses man to be executed]

“Ask God almighty for forgiveness, you have gravely sinned! Ask God for forgiveness! Testify [that there is no God but Allah and that Mohammad is His Messenger].”

[A fighter shoots the man with a pistol in the head amid shouts “God is greatest!” and shooting in the air.]

“The State of Islam shall remain! The state of Islam shall remain! This is the destiny of each apostate!”

al-Araqib, Israel

Al Araqib is one of the 46 Bedouin villages in the Negev desert that the state of Israel refuses to recognize. The residents of the village, both past and present, inherited these lands from their fathers and grandfathers. Harassment from the Israeli Army and vigilanties has become commonplace for the Araqib Bedouin. The harassment dates back to 1948, when a gang of Zionist militants rounded up 14 Bedouin men working in a field in al-Araqib and summarily executed them. Since 1948, homes and properties in al-Araqib have been regularly destroyed and stolen. On July 27th, 2010, the village was totally demolished. Since then, the village has been re-built and destroyed 33 times. However, many residents were unable to stay and moved to the recognized village of Rahat. Those who did choose to stay are confined to the area of the Al-Turi cemetary and have been living under harsh conditions, always scared of an unexpected visit from the soldiers.

Raqqa, Syria

January, 2014

This video was recorded by a former member of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in late January, 2014.

It shows ISIL members executing three men in view of a crowd in a public square in Raqqa, northern Syria.

Before the executions one of the ISIL members shouts that the men are accused of betraying Islam and spying for the (Assad) regime.

"In order to follow the Shari'a, we have to execute these men because they are betrayers of Islam. They are spies of the regime and they have betrayed us. Our brothers in ISIL were able catch these men who we will execute in the name of God."

After the killings the bodies of the three men are thrown into a canyon in an area known as Houtat Suluk, northeast of Raqqa.

Local residents allege that more than 400 bodies have been dumped in this same location since ISIL took control of areas of northeastern Syria in mid January. This claim is unconfirmed.

-Al Qaeda affiliated rebels in Syria executed two Alawite men on September 16 in the main square of the rebel-controlled city of Raqqa. Fighters from the “Islamic state of the Levant and Iraq”, a Sunni extremist group affiliated with Al Qaeda, justified the execution on the grounds that the men were “Nusaries”, a derogritory term used to describe members of the Alawite sect of Islam, from which Syrian president Bashar al-Assad hails.

When local women witnessing the execution protested the actions of the fighters, the fighters cursed the women and claimed that the men had raped women in the city of Homs. The men were subsequently executed and their bodies carted away in the back of a pick-up truck. This event has reinforced fears that Sunni extremists will try to eliminate the Alawite community of Syria if president Bashar al-Assad falls from power.

A multi-media essay (with photos, video and text) about child prisoners that are awaiting execution in Yemen. Only five countries - Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen - continue the execution of minors in violation of international law, which “prohibits, without exception, the execution of individuals for crimes committed before they turn eighteen.” The United States was included on that list until 2005 when the Supreme Court finally outlawed the death penalty for minors under eighteen. There are currently 77 juvenile inmates in Sanaa's Central Prison. 35 of them are at high risk of being executed.

Two the convicts were present inside the dock while the other 17 were sentenced in absentia.
The execution verdict will finally be pronounced on November 10 after the Mufti’s approval.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic) Judge Ahmed Ibrahim Al-Sabeely:
“The court decided with consensus of its members to refer the convicts’ papers to the Mufti of Egypt to provide the Islamic legal opinion on the case and set the session of November 10 to review the case. The session is adjourned.”

The first convict explained that they did it in revenge for his brother who had been killed by the victim’s cousin.
The investigations confirmed that the victim, a 24-year-old young man, was repeatedly stabbed in the head, the back and the stomach, and the convicts professed committing the crime and reenacted it before the prosecution.
