Demand for Military Clothing Skyrocke...
By Reda Kareem
20 Jun 2014

June 20, 2014
Babel, Iraq

Iraqi men flock to a buy military clothing at a market in the Hilla district of Babel. Demand for military clothing has skyrocketed in Iraq since Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the spiritual leader of Iraqi-Shias, called on Iraqis to take up arms against ISIL.

Sayed Muslim, tailor:
“These type of clothes are in high demand. Everyday I get volunteers coming and asking for uniforms to be tailored. People of all ages, young men and old people, all come and ask me to tailor uniforms for them.”

Athab, Volunteer:
“The prices range from 30,000-35,000 dinars ($26-$30). They told us to go and get uniforms and come back, so we came here to buy them. We came to buy the jacket with 35,000 dinars and the pants with 30,000 dinars, but we are workers, so we demand the ministry to support and help us. We cannot afford this, we are workers, we work to get paid and then we waste the money on these clothes. Whoever opened the door for volunteering should have prepared clothes for us!”

Issa Ismael Khalil inawi, Volunteer:
“We buy the military uniforms, we volunteered in the name of God and our spiritual leader Sayed Ali al-Sistani. He, who wants to die in the name of God and defend Iraq and the holy sites in Iraq, will sacrifice everything, his money and everything he has. He will leave everything and go to the Jihad, the Jihad of the spiritual leader”.

Mohammad Ahmed Alwan, Sales person:
“We are the owners of the shop selling military uniforms. After the Fatwa issued the spiritual leader, the demand for uniforms has increased because of the people who volunteered to defend the country and the people. We are decreasing the prices in order to provide a service for those soldiers and to help them. Prices are the same, there are no problems, and we try to decrease the prices as an incentive for them. It is a nice gesture and our duty is to make it easy for them and to support them.”

Uniforms of North Korea
pyongyang
By Gavin John
24 Apr 2014

There are an estimated nine and a half million members in the Peoples Korean Army in both active and reserve forces inside the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK). This fact is quite evident in Pyongyang where buses full of soldiers and officers walking the streets are a common sight. While highly advised against photographing any members of the military, it is a fact of life in the DPRK that is hard to avoid. The DPRK reveres it's military and it's proud to boast of it's "successes" in the 1950-1953 Korean War and it's "victory" over the United States and Republic of Korea armies. The Victorious Fatherland Liberation Museum in Pyongyang is a sprawling testament to this version of history, with entire floors dedicated to events such as the "Liberation of Seoul". As well they proudly display destroyed and captured American planes, tanks and even a patrol vessel docked in the nearby river as trophies. All of which are technology not used by the United States for over 40 years. The KPA is most known for it's activities near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) with South Korea at the village of Panmunjom. Contrary to popular belief, soldiers from both sides do not face each other on a daily basis. Both the North and the South alternate days standing guard at the border as well as alternate days where visitors can tour the site. This "Tourism Diplomacy" is one of the few co-operative initiatives that the North and South regularly adhere to. The distinctive blue negotiation buildings are no longer used for actual negotiations and is the only place where the photographing of soldiers is tolerated to a certain degree. The photographer visited North Korea (DPRK) in April, 2014
