Lebanese PM Najib Mikati met on Monday, July 23, with Lebanese Social Affairs Minister Wael Abu Faour and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Lebanon Representative Ninette Kelley over issues pertaining to the Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
Abu Faour told reporters after the meeting that the Lebanese government is committed to assist the displaced Syrians who fled to the country due to the violence taking place in Syria.
The meeting discussed the possible Arab and international assistance to enable Lebanon to assume its duty of helping the Syrian refugees and improving their living conditions.
Abu Faour said Lebanon received several calls from different sides and foundations expressing desire and capability to assist Lebanon in this regard, “but what is missing up till now is a Lebanese plan to be presented to these sides upon which they would make their decisions," he added.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic) – Lebanon’s Social Affairs Minister, Wael Abu Faour:
“We agreed that Lebanon would make a contact campaign at the Arab and international levels, particularly at the international level, to request aid for the Lebanese government to assume its duties similar to those other Arab states that relieve the displaced Syrian people.” The Social Affairs Minister said that a meeting of concerned ministers would be held in the next few days to put a joint work plan for all the ministries to provide assistance to the displaced Syrians.
On the other hand, Mikati phoned Grand Mufti, Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani, and reassured him that all facilities are currently underway along the Lebanese-Syrian borders to secure the safe passage of the displaced people into Lebanon, the Lebanon National News Agency (NNA) reported.
According to the latest weekly report released by the UNHCR, there are 30,000 Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
