Thousands of Egyptians attended the “brief” military funeral of Egypt’s former vice president Omar Suleiman and longtime spy chief of former ousted regime on Saturday, July 21. In attendance were the head of Egypt’s Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), Field Marshall Hussein Tantawi, PM Kamal al-Ganzouri, as well as representatives of President Mohamed Morsi’s office.

Weeping and screaming were loudly heard at Al-Rashdan Mosque in Nasr City in Cairo while the coffin was brought to the mosque.

The military funeral procession outside the mosque took less than five minutes.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic) – Dr. Hussein Abaza, University professor, relative of Omar Suleiman:
“He was such a patriotic person who loved Egypt and would sacrifice himself for Egypt. He always served the country and was ready to serve it in any situation. He has always been an efficient member of the military institution. Egypt for him was the dearest to his heart.”

Funeral prayers held at the mosque and were attended by several thousand mourners in addition to Egypt's Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa and a delegation from Al-Azhar.

The mosque was heavily secured by military troops.

Supporters of Suleiman gathered outside the mosque, shouting statements against the Muslim Brotherhood as they accused the MB of conspiracy with the United States to murder Suleiman.

On the other hand, supporters of ousted president Hosni Mubarak demanded on their “Pro-Mubarak” Facebook page a quick investigation into the mysterious death of Suleiman and a public announcement of the results.

Suleiman died on Thursday, July 19, at the age of 76 at a hospital in the United States while undergoing medical tests as he suffered from lung disease as well as cardiac problems according to the Egyptian state-run Middle East News Agency (MENA).

It was Suleiman, who announced Mubarak's decision to step down from power in February 2011.
