Zakariya Mohieddin, founder of Egypt's Intelligence Service, died Tuesday morning at the age of 94.

The head of Egypt’s ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, and his deputy Sami Anan attended the military funeral held for Mohieddin, who was also Vice President to Egypt’s late president Gamal Abdel-Nasser.

Mohieddin was an Egyptian military officer, member of the 1952 Revolution Command Council (RCC), politician, Prime Minister and head of the first intelligence body in Egypt, the Egyptian General Intelligence Service.

He was born in July 1918. In 1967, when Egypt lost the war with Israel, the late president Gamal Abdel-Nasser resigned and appointed Mohieddin to take over but he refused the position.

Egypt’s PM Kamal al-Ganzouri also attended the funeral along with a number of armed forces members who stressed the important role Mohieddin played in Egypt’s military and political history.
