In 1974, a group of Catholic priests defied the censors of the Franco dictatorship in Spain and put on two nights of concerts by the Chilean folk protest band, Quilapayún. The concerts were a symbol of resistance and brotherhood against the military dictatorships of Franco and Pinochet in Chile, that had just begun.
Vivianne Candia, a recent Chilean exile, was among six thousand people who went to the first concert at the Palau Blaugrana in Barcelona to sing along with the anthem of Quilapayún, ‘El Pueblo Unido Jamás Será Vencido’ (The People United Will Never Be Defeated).
38 years later, we contacted the organisers and reunited them with Vivianne, who was eternally grateful of this grand effort of solidarity and risk that would give hope to an entire generation of Chilean exiles in Spain.
