They also demand dismissal of the Interior Minister who allegedly lied to them about referring their demands, particularly the job promotion law, to the parliament for discussion and approval.

According to the protesting policemen, they want a civilian Interior Minister to replace the current one, and the establishment of social justice among policemen of different ranks.

They say that their conditions must be improved in order to be able to restore the country's security, which is already deteriorating.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic) – Protesting policeman Ahmed Abdel-Salam:
"The wages need to be well modified. Everyone knows that security is costly merchandise. So, a security man has to be financially and morally well in order to achieve security properly."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic) – Protesting policeman Mohsen Abdel-Fattah:
"Since there is no credibility on the part of the Interior Minister, we demand his dismissal. A minister who gives wrong information to his men and lies to them is not worthy of being a minister."

The police sit-in started Saturday in Cairo and elsewhere across Egypt, with several clashes taking place between the Interior Ministry security, and protesting policemen.

The protestors threaten escalation by blocking main thoroughfares if their demands are not met.
