A delegation of the Egyptian Initiative to Support the Syrian Revolution, comprising political activists and party leaders, held talks on Monday, March 26, with China's Ambassador to Egypt Song Aiguo on China's official position on the Syrian crisis.

The media was prevented from covering the meeting, but the initiative members told reporters after the meeting that the Chinese Ambassador reaffirmed China's keenness on ending the ongoing violence in Syria, support for the mission of UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan, encouragement of dialogue and political solution for the Syrian crisis and rejection of foreign interference in the Syrian issue.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic) – Basel Adel, liberal parliamentarian, Free Egyptians Party:
"We told the Chinese Ambassador that we as Egyptians are against the violence in Syria and against the regime of Bashar al-Assad. We support any initiative at the moment but at the same time we demand pressure on the regime of Bashar al-Assad to stop the violence. It is unreasonable that the whole world is talking about initiatives while violence and bloodshed are continuing and inhabited towns are being hit by mortar shells."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic) – Essam Shiha, Attorney, member of Al-Wafd Party:
"It's been a specific meeting that aims to push the Chinese government to exercise pressure on the Syrian government to stop the bloodshed in Syria, to provide assistance, to cooperate with the UN and to not use the Veto. We understand the Chinese position the rejects foreign interference in Syria because China is concerned that such interference leads to a sectarian fight inside Syria."

Members of the Egyptian Initiative to Support the Syrian Revolution held a similar meeting on Monday, March 19, with Russia's Ambassador to Egypt Serge Kerbetchenko over the Russian position on the Syrian crisis.

They said after the meeting that Russia also expressed support for a peaceful political solution in Syria and that Russia exercised pressure on the Syrian regime to cooperate with Annan.
