The Salafist Nour Party decided on Monday, February 25, to participate in the parliamentary elections of Egypt’s House of Representatives in April amid calls for boycott, but added that the government must ensure that the elections are free and fair.

The party calls on all Egypt’s political forces to participate in the elections.

In a press conference, Deputy Head of the Salafist Nour Party Bassam al-Zarqa said that there is a need for "clear and sufficient guarantees for the integrity and transparency of the election”, saying this requires certain ministries administrative bodies and crews assisting judges to be neutral.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic) - Deputy Head of the Salafist Nour Party Bassam al-Zarqa:
“Nour Party will participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections in order to complete the building of all the country’s political institutions as well as to solve the entire disasters that we are facing now. The Nour Party calls on all other political forces and coalitions to participate in the elections.”

Zarqa added that Nour Party will only form alliances with parties that have the same Islamic frame of reference.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic) - Deputy Head of the Salafist Nour Party Bassam al-Zarqa:
“Nour Party will form an electoral alliance only with parties with an Islamic reference. We all have to cooperate and unite to push our dear country Egypt to move forward. We all have to cooperate in the reconstruction of Egypt.”

On the other hand, several figures of the opposition have voiced their intention to boycott the parliamentary elections, including founder of the Constitution Party Mohamed ElBaradei who described the coming parliamentary poll as an act of "deception."

Egypt's parliamentary elections, previously scheduled to begin on 27 April, have been brought forward to start on 22 April, after Coptic Christians said that the original dates conflicted with Christian holidays, including Easter.

The first round of voting will be held on 22 and 23 April and will take place in Cairo, Beheira, El-Minya, Port Said and North Sinai. If runoffs are necessary, they will take place on 29 and 30 April. The house is expected to hold its first session on 2 July.

The Nour Party, established after the January 25 revolution, won the second most seats in parliamentary elections held at the end of 2011 after the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP).
