High Level AU Meeting in Cairo Urges Peace and Security in Africa

The African Union 2012 High Level Retreat of Special Envoys and Mediators was held on Monday, November 5, in Cairo, shedding light on the challenges facing Africa and urging peace and security on the continent.

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the first female AU Chief, said that the two-day conference would help find ways to achieve the purposes of a peaceful and conflict-free Africa.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English) – AU Chief Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma:
“As we also prepare for the golden jubilee of the OAU next year, the retreat must help us to find ways to move more speedily towards the objectives of a prosperous, peaceful, democratic and conflict-free Africa.”

Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr said that Egypt supported the AU in activating all its peacemaking efforts on the continent.

For his part, Arab League Chief Nabil al-Araby said the high level meeting was a real chance for exchanging views and visions regarding the challenges facing Africa and the solutions for the ongoing crises.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic) – Arab League Secretary-General Nabil al-Araby:
“This meeting has really become a gathering for exchanging views, visions and experiences on the best ways of putting an end to different crises, preventing their renewal and spreading peace, security and stability in our African continent.”

The theme of the conference is “Transforming the African peace and security context in the next decade: appraisal and opportunity.”

The conference included dignitaries and diplomats from different African states.

It is the third consecutive annual African Union retreat of this kind to take place in Egypt.

Egypt’s President Mohamed Morsi also invited a number of participants from the retreat to meet him at the presidential palace.
