Lebanese President Michel Suleiman said on Monday, October 15, that Israel has never stopped damaging vast agricultural areas to displace citizens, adding that Israel should stop aggressions against people in agricultural zones of Southern Lebanon.
Suleiman gave a speech at a conference, marking the occasion of World Food Day, organized by the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.
The conference was organized under the slogan “Agricultural Cooperatives Feed the World”.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic) – Lebanese President Michel Suleiman:
“The courtiers resorting to aggression and occupation should be forced to retreat and submit to international will. This applies to Israel, which has not stopped since its establishment, resorting to aggression and various aggressive practices, including damaging vast agricultural areas, uprooting tens of thousands of trees and burning gardens in order to displace farmers and villagers of whole towns, and broaden its area and impose a new reality. Isn’t planting cluster bombs and mines in Southern Lebanon a type of masked occupation?”
Suleiman said that attention should be given to the agricultural sector through the necessary funding, adding that the act of addressing the issue of food safety remains the Lebanese government’s first duty.
He announced that the government had begun implementing the agriculture development strategy since 2010 and was able so far to develop the agricultural infrastructure. Lebanese President also called for adopting necessary measures to introduce Lebanese products into world markets.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic) – Lebanese President Michel Suleiman:
“Therefore, the state started to apply the strategy of developing the agricultural sector since 2010 and managed to accomplish many basic stages of this strategy, including the development of agriculture infrastructure, providing studies and research, issuing and developing necessary legislation. All this effort focuses on the necessity of giving Lebanese farmers and all agricultural sectors the ability to be independent and to allow them to gradually go without all forms of government subsidies.”
World Food Day is celebrated every year around the world on October 16, the day when the FAO was founded in 1945.
The day is celebrated widely by many other organizations concerned with food security.
