President Mohamed Morsi gave a speech on Saturday, October 6, at Cairo’s International Stadium, marking the 39th anniversary of Egypt's military victory against Israel during the 1973 war, commonly known as the 6 October or Yom Kippur War.
Morsi said that the 1973 war was a historic victory that restored the dignity of all the Egyptians.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic) – Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi:
“The 1973 war was a decisive battle. This battle, by the grace of God, was the more distinguished one among all the battles throughout the history. This battle restored for all the Egyptians not only the occupied land but also restored the dignity of all Egyptians. It restored for all of us our dignity.” He added that the January 25 Revolution was the second victory when the people and the army united.
Morsi said that he was optimistic over Egypt’s future and that he has confidence in all Egyptians.
Tens of thousands of people who gathered at Cairo stadium to commemorate the 39th anniversary of the 1973 Yom Kippur war that ended the Israeli occupation of the Sinai Peninsula, shouted statements like “The People, the police and the Army are one hand” and “We love Morsi”.
Defense Minister Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, Chief-of-Staff Sedki Sobhi, PM Hesham Kandil and a number of military commanders attended the ceremony.
On 6 October 1973, the Egyptian army defeated its Israeli counterpart to liberate the Sinai ‎Peninsula, which had been occupied by Israel six years earlier. Every year since, Egyptians have ‎commemorated the historic victory.
