Egypt, Spain FMs Discuss Economic Pro...

Egyptian and Spanish delegations led by the Foreign Ministers of both countries, Mohamed Kamel Amr and Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo, met Monday, September 10, in Cairo, where they discussed methods to strengthen economic ties between the two countries.
Margallo also met with Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi but the meeting was closed to the media.
After the meeting, Egyptian and Spanish Foreign Ministers held a joint press conference where they talked about the future economic cooperation between Egypt and Spain.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Spanish) – Spanish FM Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo:
“This visit aims to increase cooperation and ties between the two countries. It will be followed by a visit of Spanish businessmen to Egypt. Through this visit, we want to prove that Egypt and the Egyptian government are important to Spain.” Spanish Florien Minister added that Egypt has the right to return its stolen funds by fugitive businessmen such as Hussein Salem, who fled to Spain and is being tried in absentia.
He noted that if the Egyptian judiciary convicts Salem, Spain has agreed to extradite him and return his funds in the Spanish banks to the Egyptian government.
For his part, Amr told reporters that the Egyptian-Spanish cooperation committee would be held soon for the first time in three years.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic) – Egyptian FM Mohamed Kamel Amr:
“We agreed that the joint committee between Egypt and Spain, which was held last time three years ago, will be held at the end of this year or the beginning of next year at most. The Foreign Minister handed President Morsi an invitation from King of Spain to visit his country and the President accepted the invitation, and we’ll set a date for the visit in the upcoming period.”
Margallo said that Morsi discussed with him the difficulties facing Eygptians to get entry visas to Spain and the warning of Spain to its citizens against visiting Egypt, and Margallo promised to resolve these issues as soon as possible.
They also talked about increasing the number of Spanish tourists visiting Egypt as well as future Spanish investments in Egypt in the fields of renewable energy, particularly solar energy, and railway transportation.

Newly appointed UN-Arab League envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, met on Monday, September 10, with Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Amr Kamel in Cairo, where they discussed the deteriorating situation in Syria.
Brahimi and Amr then headed to the Egyptian Presidency where they met with Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi; the meeting was closed to the media.
Brahimi also held talks with Arab League Chief Nabil al-Araby on the Syrian crisis.
The UN-Arab League envoy is scheduled to visit the Syrian capital city of Damascus in three days to meet with Syrian officials and representatives of the opposition and then he will head to New York to discuss the results with representatives of the Security Council member states.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Spanish) - UN-Arab League Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi:
“I will meet with officials and also with people from civil society organizations, intellectuals and others in the capital city (of Damascus) and, Allah willing, in cities other than the capital.” Brahimi described his mission to Syria as “a very difficult mission” but he added that he didn’t have the right to refuse an attempt to provide assistance to the Syrian people and help put an end to their tragedy.
