FEATURES AFRICA Record Maize Harvest
Sandspruit, Volksrust, Mpumalanga, South Africa
By Marize de Klerk
20 Aug 2014

South Africa’s 2014 maize harvest has the highest yield ever according to the CEO of Grain SA*, Jannie de Villiers. The country’s Crop Estimates Committee expects a total crop of more than 14 million tons, the largest in about 3 decades. Farmers produced this crop on only about 63 % of the hectarage used to grow the previous record crop in the 1980s, says De Villiers. The large harvest however, means a huge drop prices for the farmers, but on the other hand it should also mean a bigger availability and lower food prices for consumers in South Africa and surrounding countries, according to an agriculture supply chain researcher at the University of Pretoria, Deon Scheepers. De Villiers says there are plans to export about 2 million tons of maize later in the year.

FEATURES AFRICA Hearing app
Pretoria
By Marize de Klerk
28 Aug 2014

Hearing screening could be done easily and affordably in Africa and the rest of the world in future. A team of audiologists and engineers of South Africa’s University of Pretoria developed a mobile health application called hearScreen allowing just this. This application consists of a software application running on a smartphone with an Android open source operating system, paired with affordable headphones.

Conventional hearing screen equipment is bulky, needs electricity, costs upwards of US$ 2500 and requires a level of expertise and training in order to handle it effectively. In contrast, using hearScreen is easy and requires very little training. It also costs a fraction of the conventional equipment and data can instantly be uploaded to a database for remote diagnosing purposes, according to the inventor, Prof De Wet Swanepoel.
